Want a new kitchen? Who doesn’t? Seriously. Ever since I bought my farm out in Connecticut a few years ago I’ve been working on landscaping, barn issues, and bringing the upkeep of the property up to date. I haven’t been able to indulge in the frills I have planned – a new kitchen and bathroom.

But I’ve been trolling home shows, renovation stores, and cabinet makers looking for ideas to create a beautiful but workable kitchen. I love the cabinets above, part of the New Traditional Collection from Plain & Fancy, who make a fabulous range of styles perfect for a variety of settings. I like these for their subtle sophistication, with a note of French country flair.

One of my push-backs to really getting into planning stages? Cost of course, and also the very long time horizon of microwaved dinners, workers tromping around, and dust.

But recently I heard about a service that helps mitigate both the cost and the time concerns in a very ingenious way. Green Demolitions is an East Coast based service that comes into a home and removes an entire kitchen (cabinets, appliances, unfortunately I don’t think I could talk them into removing floor tiles and an unnecessary wall) completely for free, and then recycles the removed items. They also demo and resell bathrooms, outdoor kitchens, and other home decor.

And by recycling we don’t mean spending energy and resources chipping up wood into a reclaimed product. The removed kitchens are resold, usually in fabulous shape – because many of them come out of really well maintained homes – and at a fabulous discount.

I talked with John Green, the store manager at the White Lake, New York location who said the removal process takes them a day on average. I’ve been through a few kitchen remodels in my day and the demo process always takes at least a few days – naturally, the contractor is charging by the hour. So a homeowner who donates cabinets reaps these benefits:

  • Saves a few days contractor’s fees
  • Saves toting / demo box fees
  • Saves time
  • Gets a tax deduction for donating to a 501 (c)(3) non profit
  • Can feel comfortable that their old cabinets will find a new life in another kitchen
  • Can help the planet by recycling and not adding to landfill
  • Support for a fabulous charity, Recovery Unlimited

And for those looking for cabinets, Green Demolitions ships their kitchens to all continental states! I’d say that’s one big win-win.
